Netflix Launches ‘smart Downloads’ To Boost Binge Viewing

In a bid to streamline binge-viewing on its mobile app, Netflix Inc. will automatically delete an episode after a user has watched it and download the next one.

The feature, called “smart downloads,” builds on the streaming giant’s launch of a download option in late 2016 to facilitate offline viewing when subscribers aren’t connected to the internet.

But the old feature can get clunky, as users have to manually download individual episodes and delete them from their devices as they go.

“We know how annoying it can be to go through all your apps and delete files you no longer need; we also understand that when it comes to Netflix, the faster you can get to the next episode you want to watch, the better,” wrote Cameron Johnson, director of product innovation, in a blog post announcing the new feature.

Here’s how it works: Say a user has downloaded the first three episodes of a series. After she watches the first one, Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) will automatically delete it and download episode four so she can continue binge-watching without having to hunt down new installments and get rid of the old ones.
